Lightning Strike

7th September

A unexpected crash of thunder woke me up from my writings and I went outside to my balcony to check out the weather.

There were a couple of guys opposite with their cars under a tree doing some servicing with their bonnets up.

Suddenly another bolt of lightening struck somewhere very close indeed. One of the two guys collapsed and keeled over backwards.

It didn't seem that the lightening strike exactly there, but I reached for the mobile to call an ambulance anyway. But the guy got up, collected himself and did a runner for cover.

Either he had been caught in an air blast or else had simply collapsed due to shock.

He was obviously OK, but I certainly see why Thai people seem to get so scared of thunder storms.

Pressure

6th September

My area of town was woken up the other day by streams of ambulances and rescue vehicles attending a collapse at a hotel construction site.

The roads were also busy with motorbikes either going to help out or just to take a look. Needless to stay most of the neighbours got on their bikes to follow.

The rumours of death and injury got out of hand and reached ludicrous proportions until a final figure of 7 injured became the stable estimate (5 was the figure reported in the press).

But what caught my eye was a forum post from a local reporter suggesting that there had been initial pressure to keep the accident out of the media.

I don't know how many bloggers and internet forum members there are in Pattaya but one suspects that it would be almost impossible to silence such an event.

But in the meantime I am wondering who many news items have been successfully hushed up. Given the amount of crime that is reported, it wouldn't be good if that was just the tip of the iceberg.
