I have just bought a hand-held scanner. It is based on the same system now increasingly used at major airports. Ii am quite pleased with it - certainly an eye-opener. Made in Italy by Gnoccia.

The pound has collapsed, so time to recalculate the cost of a night out to see if I can still afford it.

 I have assumed 48 to allow for the Thai bankers robbers ATM charge of 150 Baht (£3.13) and UK bank commission imposed at 1%.

An evening's short time on Walking Street with a top end selection

Drinks: 3 beers + 2 lady drinks = 465 Baht = £9.70
Barfine: 700 Baht = £14.60
Room: 300 = £6.30
Short time 1500 = £31.30 (no tip, sign of the financial times)

For a grand total of 2965 Baht = £61.80 (compared with May 2009 £55.40)

On Soi 6 the price for the same drinks and a short time with an attractive girl:

Drinks: 3 beers + 2 lady drinks = 440 Baht = £9.20
Barfine: 0 Baht
Room: 300 = £6.30
Short time 700 = £14.60 (no tip, sign of the financial times)

For a grand total of 1440 = £30.00 (compared with May 2009 £26.90)

  Affecting Nightlife in Pattaya?

After the enforced end of the red shirts protests in Bangkok and notably at the Pattaya ASEAN conference, things are pretty calm at the moment.

Probably a period of regrouping rather than a lasting calm though.
